Aldeburgh Market

It is a delight to write about Aldeburgh Market for many reason. Possibly the most pressing is that it is owned and run by my friend and one time partner Sara Fox, with whom I ran the Aldeburgh Cookery School. Sara and I were at school together in Kings Lynn Norfolk but lost touch as one does when lives diverge, mine to London and New York, Sara’s to the neighbouring county of Suffolk.

There she opened and ran a small private hotel, a pub and several restaurants most recently The Lighthouse on Aldeburgh High Street. A committed food lover she has received many plaudits and awards for her ventures and we  worked hard to make the school one of the best in Europe.

Now Sara has a project that sums up all she believes passionately. Aldeburgh Market is really two ventures : the Market Cafe which uses food from the fish and vegetable market that is the second part of the shop. So Sara can source the ingredients, cook with them and sell them to the grateful folk of Aldeburgh.

A wonderfully designed counter provides crystal fresh fish and shellfish and Andrew , Sara’s son, offers good advice on how to cook his wares.  Local foods are strongly supported with asparagus, blueberries, salads and brassicas coming from within a couple of miles radius of the town.

Folk love the kedgeree which is a recipe we developed at the school. I always have the locally smoked haddock on mash pictured above.
